The University of Maine can breathe a sigh of relief.... kind of. The Black Bears earned their first America East Conference win, a 57-49 victory over New Hampshire, Thursday night, which snapped their 16-game losing streak. It was the first time Cindy Blodgett and company felt that winning feeling since December 3 against Robert Morris. Junior Brittany Boser led Maine with 13 points, while the Black Bear defense played superbly, holding UNH's leading scorer, Candace Williams 0-for-17 from the field.
Maine returns to action for its Pink Zone game on Sunday vs. UMBC at Alfond Arena. That game will be broadcast locally on WABI beginning at 12 p.m. Also being televised on Sunday is a Hartford-Marist Pink Zone match-up on ESPN2, the only mid-major game as part of the network's February Frenzy. The game will be shown in its entirety in the "of-interest region", Connecticut and the New York metropolitan area, while all other regions of the country will cut in and out from Chase Arena, as well as the other 3 games being played nation-wide. Saturday Slate Busy
After a few days off, a full slate of games is back on Saturday. New Hampshire, which hosts Albany in a 1:00 game in Lundholm, boasts two of the top three scorers in conference season so far. Looking at the conference-only stats, junior forward Candace Williams, who has one player of the week under her belt so far this season, is tops with 23 points per game. Junior guard Amy Simpson, meanwhile, is a threat from outside, averaging 19.8 ppg and 4 triples per game. One of these two has led the Wildcats in each conference game this season, and 16 of 18 games overall this season. Together, they're a strong inside-out threat for Coach Cole's squad and they have led UNH to a 2-2 AE record. Now on to Saturday's match-ups....
Albany at New Hampshire 1 p.m.
The Great Danes took both games of last year's season series, each by double figures... UNH junior forward Candace Williams ranks 1st in America East in scoring in conference games only (23 ppg), while junior guard Amy Simpson is 3rd (19.8 ppg)... Great Dane sophomore Janea Aiken is averaging 25.5 points per league road game as opposed to 8.5 points per league home game.
Stony Brook at Hartford 2 p.m.
Hartford defeated the Seawolves three times last year, including a quarterfinal game at the America East Championship... Three Hawks are shooting 58.1% or better in league games this year... Stony Brook is second in the league averaging 41 rebounds per conference game, led by junior Sarah Kazadi averaging a league-best 8.8 rebounds per AE game.
Binghamton at UMBC 7 p.m.
The season series went in the favor of the Bearcats last year with Binghamton pulling out a 64-58 win in Baltimore... Binghamton is tops in blocked shots and three-pointers per conference game... Both teams are scoring just under 69 points per game and rebounding 37 shots per game in league play.
Boston U. at Maine 7 p.m.
Each team won its home game in last year's season series... The Terriers and Black Bears are the two best free-throw shooting teams in the conference; Maine leads the way shooting .775, while Boston U. also shoots very well at .756... At last year's game in Orono, there were 56 total free-throw attempts, which Maine converted into 33 of its 82 points.

UNH Gets A Leg Up On The Field
New Hampshire and Maine played the league's first conference contest last night at Lundholm Gym with the Wildcats coming out victorious, 51-47 behind 18 points from junior Candace Williams and 17 points from Amy Simpson (on her 21st birthday, no less). The Black Bears' top scorer was point guard Kristin Baker with 11 points, but junior Brittany Boser also chipped in 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Home teams won over 62% of the time last season (45-27) in conference play. Home teams are now up 1-0 this year; we'll see if that trend continues tonight as three more conference openers will be played tonight. Here are quick previews of each:
Boston University (6-6) at Stony Brook (2-10), 7 p.m.
In the conference-opener for both teams, both squads come in going 1-1 in the last two games... Boston University picked up last season's game at Stony Brook on March 1 by a 12-point margin to finish the season sweep... The Seawolves are 1-3 at Pritchard Gym this season, while the Terriers are 3-3 on the road.
Binghamton (5-8) at Hartford (5-7) 7 p.m.
The Hawks return home for the first time in over a month (December 6) with 29 straight home-court victories under their belts... Binghamton finishes up a season-long five-game road stretch with its visit to Chase Arena.
UMBC (8-5) at Vermont (6-7) 7 p.m.
In a role reversal, the preseason favorite Catamounts host the first-place Retrievers for both teams' conference-openers... This game features four of the top-six scorers in America East this season (Carlee Cassidy, Michelle Kurowski, May Kotsopoulos and Courtnay Pilypaitis).
Also, as a closing note, Burlington Free Press writer John Fantino published his mid-season prediction of how the America East will look on March 7, the final day of the regular season.
